Repeated 1v1 Defending

Key Objectives

This practice develops the understanding and technique of pressuring your opponent. Specifically trying to force players into wide areas.

Technical/Coaching Points

  • Close the player with the ball down quickly

  • Slow down before you get there

  • Get low, bend your knees to be able to react quickly

  • Keep your eyes on the ball

  • Timing of the tackle

  • Body shape to force the attacker wide

Organisation

Set up a square or rectangle with cones. Each attacker has a ball

How to play

The attackers take it in turns to dribble from one end of the square to the other.

The defender must try to win the ball, or force the attacker out the side of the square

If the attacker successfully makes it through, then the next attacker goes, forcing the defender to react quickly.

When the defender either wins the ball or forces the play outside, or after a set time the defender swaps

Progression

If your plays find this too easy or too difficult, you could progress the game in the following ways:

  • Increase or reduce the width of the playing area
