Congested midfield

Key Objectives

Teach your players to use width to move the ball out of congested areas in order to maintain possession and attack

Technical/Coaching Points

  • Movement off the ball in tight areas to create angles

  • Receiving under pressure

  • Spread the ball wide away from congestion

Organisation

Set out a pitch with 2 end zones and 2 wide channels

How to play

Play starts with the goalkeeper. The goalkeeper must pass into the central area.

Players combine to get the ball wide away from pressure and then make movements to receive and score in the end zone

The players on the outside are neutral and play for whichever team is in possession

Progression

If your players find this too easy or too difficult, you could progress the game in the following ways:

  • Alter the space

  • Overload/underload

  • Limit touches in the middle/outside
