Defending Outnumbered

Key Objectives

Teach your defenders how to defend whilst outnumbered

Technical/Coaching Points

  • Defenders working as a pair

  • Deny the player on the ball the option to shoot

  • Body shape and positioning of 2nd defender to take out passes

  • Body shape to keep play on one side

Organisation

Mark out a half way line on the pitch

Split the players into 2 teams. 3 attackers and 2 defenders in each half. (can adjust numbers based on players available, as long as there is an overload in favour of the attackers

How to play

Play starts with the goalkeepers. Standard rules except that players are locked in their zones to make an overload in favour of the attackers

Progression

If your players find this too easy or too difficult, you could progress the game in the following ways:

  • Allow players to cross the half way line to recover and create parity
